Finding Joy in the Midst of Hardship

Over the past few months, a few of us from church have had the privilege of working alongside Leeds City Council to support Afghan families who have recently arrived in the UK after fleeing dangerous situations. This has been an eye opening and heart softening experience for all.
Together we’ve been running an informal playgroup—a simple space with toys, games, and laughter. For the children, it’s been a chance to play freely again. For the parents, it’s offered a rare moment to rest, to begin processing what it means to arrive in a new country, and to watch their children smile in safety.
For me, this work has been profoundly moving. I have cried as I’ve listened to families’ stories, I’ve felt my heart open to what life as a refugee really looks like, and I’ve seen beauty shining even in the midst of pain. Something as small as bubbles or a football has reminded me that joy can break through, even in the hardest of circumstances.
As I reflect on this, I’m reminded of Jesus’ words: “I was a stranger and you invited me in” (Matthew 25:35). In these moments, I can see how even small acts of welcome carry eternal weight. We have also had the privilege of getting to know the interpreters who are on the front line, meeting families from the airport and hearing first hand the stories that they will never forget. Our group has even had a chance to pray with someone who felt very moved by the love and support shown.
This journey has changed me. I know it has. I feel so blessed to show the love to others that God shows to me every day. I feel so blessed to be able to meet these families and see their faces in my mind as I pray for them at home. It has been a privilege to stand alongside these families, to welcome them in small ways, and to be reminded of the resilience of the human spirit. I know that this small act of love (turning up each Wednesday to play) God will use for his Glory.
If you’d like to know more about this work, or even join us in creating spaces of welcome and joy, we’d love to hear from you. Together, small acts of kindness can make a big difference.
