Love leaves a mark

Love leaves a mark

“Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”
John‬ 13:34‬ NIV‬‬

Often it can feel like we have our eyes on Jesus, yet we are stumbling through the world, trying to keep looking up, while the terrain beneath our feet forces us to look down and navigate difficult and challenging situations as we make our way through life, on our journey home to Jesus.

‘Love one another’

Jesus commands us to love one another, and this week I witnessed something so beautiful. A recently baptised disciple of Jesus was serving at a community event. She was spray-painting children’s hair. Her station at the event was by far the busiest. From the moment the doors opened to half an hour after the event finished, she was meeting with children one after another—making them smile, loving them, engaging with them, and doing their hair.

As I watched her, my heart was moved by her love for each individual person who came to see her. She took time to greet them, to find out who they were, and to ask them what they wanted done.

She was loving them.
Drawing towards them.
Meeting them where they were at.
She made them smile.
She made them laugh.
Parents were watching, feeling joy swell in their hearts.

As the children left that station, they were changed. Physically, they had purple hair and sparkles all over their faces. Spiritually, they had been loved, seen, noticed, and had experienced something more than just hairspray.

When it was time for her to leave, she showed me her hands. They were covered in semi-permanent purple hairspray—and glitter. Love had left its mark on those she met, and love had left its mark on her.

Love leaves a mark on us.

‘As I have loved you’

Love left its mark on our Lord and Saviour, Jesus. He came and humbled Himself to take on the sin of the world. His hands and feet were nailed to the cross, He was separated from God and paid the ultimate price for Sin - which is death- so we could enter into the love God has for us. Jesus did not stay defeated and rose meaning that we have hope that we rise with him!

Jesus continues to love us with an unconditional love that when we stop and listen we can almost hear. We can love others because we are loved. We can forgive others because we are forgiven. We can reach out to others because He reached out to us.

Love leaves a mark.

God, we want to receive your love today for ourselves.
Jesus, thank you for your sacrifice, thank you for your love for us, help us today to love those around us. Help us to follow your command to love one another.
Spirit, give us power to let love leave a mark on us.

Amen.
